It changes the way I experience the world.

Whenever life feels busy or my mind becomes noisy, I often do something very simple.

I look up.

The endless blue sky has always brought me a feeling of calm. I can't explain exactly why. Perhaps it is the colour itself. Perhaps it is the feeling of space and freedom that comes with it.

Whatever the reason, after a few quiet minutes I usually feel lighter.

The same happens when I sit by the sea.

The blue water, the soft colours of the horizon, the warm sand and the changing light all create a feeling that is difficult to describe with words.

As an artist, I have learned that colours do much more than decorate a picture.

They create emotion.

Long before I started drawing my own illustrations, artists were studying how colours make us feel. One of the most influential teachers was Johannes Itten, who taught at the Bauhaus school in Germany. He believed that colour was one of the most powerful ways an artist could communicate emotion and encouraged his students to explore how different colour combinations created different feelings.

Modern researchers continue to study this subject. Psychologist Andrew J. Elliot has reviewed decades of research on colour and psychological functioning. His work suggests that colours can influence our emotions and behaviour, although those effects depend on context, culture and personal experience rather than following one simple rule.

I like that idea.

It reminds us that colour is personal.

The colour that brings me peace may remind someone else of a completely different memory.

That is one reason I love spending time in nature.

Nature never uses just one shade of green.

The sea is never only blue.

Even the sky changes colour throughout the day.

Every walk becomes a lesson in colour without us even realising it.

When I draw, I often think back to those quiet moments.

A warm sunset.

The cool blue of the ocean.

Fresh green leaves after rain.

The soft golden light of early morning.

Even though many of my illustrations are simple line drawings, I still think about colour while I create them. I imagine the feeling behind the drawing before I imagine the colours that might one day bring it to life.

Perhaps that is why I enjoy drawing peaceful places so much.

Mountains.

Forests.

Beaches.

Quiet little adventures.

They remind me that sometimes the greatest gift nature gives us isn't just beautiful scenery.

It's the feeling that comes with it.

Why Artists Pay Attention to Colour

Colour is one of the most powerful tools an artist can use. It can suggest warmth or coolness, energy or calm, and help tell a story without using words.

Understanding colour isn't only about choosing beautiful combinations. It's about understanding how colours help people connect with an image.

Looking Up

One of the simplest habits I've developed is looking up at the sky whenever I need a quiet moment.

It doesn't cost anything.

It only takes a minute.

Yet it reminds me that beauty often exists in the places we stop noticing.

Perhaps that's why the colours of nature continue to inspire so much of my artwork.

Sometimes all we need is a little blue sky to remember to slow down.

Discover how colours influence mood and creativity, and why the colours of nature inspire my hand-drawn artwork and everyday life.
Learn how to start a sketchbook habit with simple ideas that improve creativity, observation, and confidence, even if you think you can't draw.
Many people believe great drawing skills are essential to becoming an artist.
